KEARNEY - This year's Frat House of Fear will be scarier than ever.
Students from the Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity at the University of Nebraska at Kearney hope the changes to their annual haunted house will draw more people and raise more money than previous years.
Proceeds from the haunted house, which will be open from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday, will be donated to the Jubilee Center. Tours of the spooky fraternity house in University Residence North at 1601 University Drive cost $2 or two cans of food.
"It's one way that we can give back to the community, and it's also a lot of fun for our guys," said Nick Summerfield, Pi Kappa Alpha president. "It's a good way to have a lot of fun and donate to a charity at the same time."
Pi Kappa Alpha is partnering with the United Way of the Kearney Area for the event.
"We feel for college students to be socially responsible increases the commitment to the community," said Penny Parker, communications manager at the United Way. "It improves people's lives to help another person. The United Way is a great agency to collaborate with to accomplish those goals."
According to a press release from the fraternity, rooms on the first two floors of the house will be turned into haunted enclaves with various themes along with larger decorated main rooms of the house.
The haunted house will feature a polka dot room, a clown room and other themed rooms. This year's tour also includes a haunted cornfield and a graveyard.
"We tone down the scariness for younger groups and really ramp it up when college kids come through," Summerfield said.
The haunted house is open to students and members of the community.
Volunteers from sororities will lead groups through the haunted house.
Last year, the haunted house raised $540 and 650 canned food items were donated to the food pantry.
Children will receive a gift bag filled with treats donated by local businesses.
