Last week Gloria and Dan LeDroit, Janice Wiebusch, Jack McSweeney and I had the privilege of serving as host families for six crew members and wives of the USS Nebraska submarine based near Seattle.

The group traveled to Axtell Thursday and was greeted with a standing ovation by the Axtell Public School student body. The students were full of questions regarding the duties of the servicemen.

It is unfortunate the Kearney school administration denies such a visit from the Blue Crew, as it is not a recruiting expedition. Rather they are guests of the Nebraska Admirals and Nebraska to tour the state for which the submarine is named. The men are chosen as elite candidates for this honor and we must remember they are serving in the military to protect our country, state and city.

Thursday evening the group and hosts were guests at the University of Nebraska at Kearney for dinner along with several members of the ROTC program and their instructor.

Friday, after visiting several of Kearney’s fine attractions, the crew traveled back to Lincoln, Omaha and Beatrice, and visited wineries and attractions and were guests at the Cornhuskers football game Saturday.

Kudos to the Nebraska Admirals for hosting the Blue Crew from Seattle.
