GRAND ISLAND — Melissa Chavez, a 50-year-old Grand Island woman, was shot early this morning (Monday, Aug. 26) by her estranged husband, according to Grand Island police.

Police responded to the incident at 12:24 a.m. at 2104 N. Huston Ave.

Chavez is in stable condition and is being treated for her injuries.

Officers were able to track down the suspect, 44-year-old Mario Chavez of Grand Island, and take him into custody without incident around 2:30 a.m., following a short standoff and negotiation. The charge is currently first-degree assault.

“This investigation is ongoing and charges may be added or amended,” said the police department.
