KEARNEY — Eight mascots will strut their stuff Saturday at a dance off at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

“We’ll see whether or not the mascots can cut a rug or whether they have two left feet. The crowd will be the judge of that,” said Ali Mercado, an external relations/marketing intern with UNK athletics.

The eight mascots are: Beep Beep from the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, Cherry Larry from Sonic Drive-In, Lucky from Aaron’s Inc., Swifty from Chapman Swifts Coffee House, Stanley from The Stately Shirt Co., Louie the Loper from UNK, Papa from Stagecoach and Stormy from the Tri-City Storm.

“I think everyone is pretty excited about it,” Mercado said.

Saturday marks the debut for Beep Beep, a KVFD fire prevention character to remind children and adults to check the battery in their smoke detectors monthly and to replace batteries twice a year. Detectors should be replaced every 10 years.

Beep Beep was funded by the city of Kearney and Suburban Fire Protection District 1.

Saturday’s mascot dance off will take place at halftime of both the women’s basketball game beginning at 2 p.m. and the men’s basketball game at 4 p.m. in the Health and Sports Center.

Both games are against the Northeastern State University RiverHawks.
