KEARNEY — When the mother who left her newborn twins Monday at a Kearney hospital is located police say they won’t release her identity.
Kearney Police Department Chief Bryan Waugh said officials want to check on the mother’s welfare.
“Our goal, with the outreach to the community, is not one to condemn or discourage the decision of the mother, but rather to ensure this mother is safe based on the circumstances presented,” said a KPD news release late Wednesday afternoon.
KPD investigators continue to work with CHI Health Good Samaritan, where the babies were born Saturday, and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to locate and check on the well-being of the mother who left the hospital Monday. The
KPD also is working closely with Buffalo County Attorney Shawn Eatherton who said the infants are being well-taken care of and he will be working directly with DHHS to ensure the proper care of the infants in the future.
“We just want to make sure this person is OK,” he said of the babies' mother. “We’re only concerned about her welfare.”
Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Kearney Police Department at 308-237-2104.
KEARNEY — Kearney police are asking for the public’s help in finding a mother who abandoned her newborn twins Monday at CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney.
"We need to check on her welfare and make sure she’s OK and gets the medical attention she may need," said Mike Young, a captain in the Kearney Police Department.
At 1:09 p.m. Monday officers were called to the hospital after the mother, who earlier gave staff false information, left the facility, leaving her twins behind.
The woman first walked into the hospital emergency room department by herself shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday, Young said. The twins were born "slightly premature" later that night.
The woman made no indication to staff that she would abandon the infants, Young said.
Monday, the mother left the hospital through the east doors near the emergency room, and was last seen walking east alone. She is described as being white, about 25 years old, with eyeglasses and brown hair. She was last seen wearing gray sweatpants, a dark jacket and black tennis shoes.
Young declined to elaborate on how police are defining the situation.
"We don’t know what it is right now. We need to check on her (the mother) most importantly," he said.
The twins are in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Anyone with information about the mother is asked to contact Kearney police at 237-2104, Crimestoppers at 237-3424 or KPD’s Facebook page.
