Members of the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office survey the scene where four teenagers were killed and one was injured Monday night.

A girl who survived a deadly crash in Sarpy County is talking and is scheduled for surgery, her family said in a statement posted on Facebook by a community group.

The crash, which killed four of her friends, left 15-year-old Roan Brandon with burns and a broken clavicle, the post said. Both will require surgery.

“Her biggest challenge was learning today that she lost her four best friends,” the family wrote on Wednesday. “She is devastated, but the grief counselor here is amazing.”

The family said they hope to have Roan home and healthy by the start of school.

They thanked the community and those from around the state who have reached out, as well as the families of the other girls.

“In their time of grief, they are lifting us up because that’s who they are,” the family said. “We don’t know why God chose her, and we don’t feel worthy of that gift when they’ve lost their girls. Their children all brought such love, light, and laughter to Roan’s life.”

They added: “Now she has four angels pushing her forward.”

The five girls were on Platteview Road just west of 180th Street when their car veered off the road, went into a ditch and caught fire. The four other girls were pronounced dead there.

Roan was taken to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy before being transferred to St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln.

The family said, “She doesn’t understand this now, but her survival is a miracle.”
