KEARNEY — Betty VanGilder, 90, of Kearney died Monday, Nov. 4, 2019, at St. Luke’s Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 16 at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services with the Rev. Roger Wendt officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation will be at 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour before services Nov. 16.
Betty Lou VanGilder was born April 11, 1929, in Winona, Minn., to Lorenz and Violet (Summers) Weinmann. She was raised in Winona and was a 1947 graduate of Winona High School.
On Sept. 11, 1948, Betty was united in marriage to Erwin VanGilder in Winona. They lived in Red Wing, Minn., Papillion, Cottage Grove, Minn., Aurora, Ill., Lincoln, Farmington, N.M., Kearney, Ladson, S.C., and back to Kearney.
Betty was a dedicated homemaker and was a gracious host. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially around the holidays. She also loved when family gathered around the piano and sang. Betty was known for her immaculate home and her beautiful, bountiful gardens.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Gary (Carla) VanGilder of St. Joseph, Mich.; daughters, Teri (Ronald) Axson of Ladson, S.C., and Geri Anderson of Kearney; seven grandchildren, Chrissy (Ronald) Zirkle, Michael (Hannah) VanGilder, Ashley (Michael) Elliot, T.J. (Schayla) Axson, Stanley VanGilder, Jazzmyn (Kyle) Smith and Jordyn (Trevor) Lybarger; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Maxine Beckman; brother-in-law, Maurice; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin VanGilder; a son at birth; her parents; four brothers, Bob Weinmann, Leo Weinmann, Vernon Weinmann and Oest Weinmann; sister, Shirley Newell; and son-in-law, Troy Anderson.
Memorials are suggested by the family to the American Lung Association.
