AURORA — Charles “Charlie” Wilcox, 97, of Aurora died Friday, June 28, 2019, at Memorial Community Care in Aurora.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora with the Rev. Sarah Ruch officiating. A family service will be at 2:30 p.m. at Shelton Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before services at the church.

Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora is in charge of arrangements.


The services will be held on his birthday, Friday, July 5. Charles E. Wilcox, the son of Charles Ray and Florence Ellen (Clark) Wilcox, was born on July 5, 1921, in Adams County and passed away on June 28, 2019, in Aurora at the age of 97.

Charlie was married to Metta Katherine Schaefer on April 25, 1943, in St. Louis, where Charlie was stationed during World War II. They met at a USO dance, where they became Jitterbug Champions. He was honorably discharged at the rank of master sergeant on Dec. 5, 1945.

Charlie was a real estate broker for C. Wilcox Realty in Lincoln for over 45 years, alongside his wife Metta. They would also sell Christmas trees at the Wilcox Tree Farm near Shelton. They had three children: Jean, John and Chuck. Metta passed away on July 18, 2014.

Charlie loved to fish, hunt and tell stories. They visited all 50 states and 17 foreign countries, and enjoyed several cruises.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Metta; and six brothers and sisters.

Charlie will be dearly missed by his three children, Jean (Russ) Williss of Lincoln, Dr. John (Lynn) Wilcox of Aurora and Dr. Charles W. (Donna) Wilcox of Papillion; five grandchildren, David Williss, John Williss (Cassie), Heather Wilcox Peters (Brian), Robin Wilcox-Morris (Jeff) and Amanda Wilcox Johnson (Mark); 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara (Bill) Borghoff; and sister-in-law, Jane Schaefer.
