HASTINGS — Milo “Eugene” Horn, 89, of Holdrege died Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings.

An open house celebration of life will be 2-4 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Phelps County Senior Center in Holdrege.

O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney is in charge of arrangements.


Milo “Eugene” was born on Aug. 25, 1930, in Holdrege to Milo William Horn and Viola Ester Marie Peterson.

Gene grew up in Holdrege and Ragan and received his education at Holdrege Public Schools. He entered the National Guard on 1950 and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 14, 1959.

He was united in marriage to Joan May Verbeck on Aug. 25, 1952, in Holdrege. The couple made their home in Holdrege where he began a lifelong career as a self-employed brick mason.

Gene was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, archery, storm chasing, pool and billiards.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joan May Horn of Holdrege; sons, Tom Horn of Avon, Colo., and his wife, Dawn, of Reno, Colo., Steve Horn and his wife, Brenda, of Grand Island and Mike Horn and his wife, Laurie, of Holdrege; daughter, Jeanette (Horn) Young and her husband, Randy, of Holdrege; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Milo and Viola; and sister, June Viles.

Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.
