COLUMBUS — Kearney Catholic’s boys finished second at the Centennial Conference Track Meet Saturday in Columbus.

The Stars won four events and scored 87 points, seven fewer points that Bishop Neumann. Aquinas finished third in the 11-team meet with 77 points.

In the girls division, Nicole Messbarger won two individual events, but the Stars finished seventh in the team race with 44 points.

The boys’ points came from several events. Trey Colling won the shot put (49 feet, 11 inches), Dalton Schmitt won the triple jump (42-4 3/4), Heinrich Haarberg won the high jump (5-10) and the 4x100 relay team took first.

Haarberg also finished second in the 100 and 200, while Camden Sesna was second in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Besides Messbarger, who won the 200 and 400, the KCHS girls’ only other top-three finish came from the winning 4x400 relay team.

Minden boys second in SWC

COZAD — Minden’s boys finished second to McCook Saturday at the Southwest Conference Track and Field Championships in Cozad.

The Bison scored 180 points while Minden scored 108. Ogallala was a distant third with 66 points.

Gothenburg won the girls title with 125 points while Ogallala was second with 104.5.

In a showdown of the Class C and Class D cross country champions, Minden’s Aiden Wheelock defeated Ainsworth’s Ben Arens in the 3,200, but the order was reversed in the 1,600.

Minden’s only other gold medalist in the boys division was Marshall Chasek in the 110-meter high hurdles. His time of 14.30 seconds is the second-fastest in the state this year.

In the girls events, Minden’s Abby Rehtus won the triple jump.
