HOLDREGE — Kearney Catholic’s boys routed Grand Island Central Catholic 5-0 Monday in the first round of the Subdistrict B-7 Tournament at Holdrege.

The Stars (4-10) advance to play the top-seeded Dusters at 4 p.m. today in the subdistrict semifinal. Hastings and Northwest play in the other semifinal.

Kearney Catholic, which has won four of its last six, scored its season high against the Crusaders, led by Kegan Bosshamer who had a hat trick with three second-half goals.

"He played really well. He communicated really well with the boys and his shots were right on today," KCHS coach Amer Arram said.

Samson David got the Stars on the scoreboard with a goal in the first five minutes, but that was the only goal in the first half..

In the second half, Bosshamer shredded the defense and Carlos Tamayo found the back of the net for another tally.

"The kids are getting to know how to play with each other a little better and getting a little confidence," Arram said of the late-season surge.

He said the two wins over Central Catholic in the past week were among the best the team has played. The Stars beat the Crusaders 3-1 in overtime last Tuesday. In that game, "we just couldn’t finish. Today, we were able to finish on a lot of plays," Arram said.

Goalie Riley Grieser earned the shutout and "made a lot of unbelievable saves," Arram said. Spencer Hogeland assisted in the defensive cause and "didn’t allow very much to pass."
