BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Hutchinson Community College freshman Zane Schmidt of Kearney has been named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference West Division Most Valuable Player and Freshman of the Year.

Schmidt, a Kearney Catholic graduate, batted .395 (94-for-238) with 16 doubles, five triples, 22 home runs, 74 runs scored and 75 driven in. He also produced 27 multiple-hit games and 20 multiple-RBI games, including a six-RBI game in which he belted three home runs in an 8-7 win against Garden City on March 28.

Schmidt led the conference in hits and home runs, ranked second in RBIs, fourth in runs, tied for fifth in triples and ninth in batting average.

His 22 homers tie the 12th-best season in conference history and are the second-most in team history. Twice during the season, Schmidt was honored as the conference player of the week, earning the award in weeks eight and 10.
