HASTINGS — Kearney Catholic’s girls scored two goals in each half to advance past Aurora, 4-0, Monday evening in the B-7 Subdistrict tournament in Hastings.
With the win, the Stars (6-7) advance to the semifinals where they will meet top-seeded Hastings at 5 p.m. today at Hastings College.
The Stars got two goals from Kaylee Grieser, one of two seniors on the team, and two assists from sophomore Sydney Owen.
"We played really well," KCHS coach Bruce Lear said. "It was kind of a big deal for us to get a lead and rest some of our starters in the second half and get contributions from a lot of players in the second half."
The Stars’ first goal came from freshman Elsie Hastings, who took a crossing pass from Breanna Suhr, another of the Stars’ 15 freshmen.
"This was the most complete game we’ve played all year and it’s a good time to do that," Lear said.
The Stars have won three of their last four games. The lone loss was to Gering in a shootout.
Against Hastings, the Stars will face a team they lost to, 8-0, early in the season before a number of lineup and position changes that have helped build the second-half surge.
"Hastings, you certainly have to put them in the top end of Class B. ... They and North Platter and the two teams that have really outplayed their competition all season," Lear said.
