LINCOLN — Kearney Catholic’s girls tennis team finished sixth for the second consecutive year in the Class B state tournament Friday at the Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln.
The Stars totaled 16.75 points to finish slightly ahead of Elkhorn (16.5) and Lincoln Christian (16).
“I think everyone came out to play,” Kearney Catholic coach Emma Schroer said. “The girls played their hearts out.”
Second-seeded Brooke Eschenbrenner and Liza Trettel won two matches Thursday to advance to Friday’s semifinals. The duo faced three-seeded Grand Island Central Catholic. The match was competitive, but the Stars fell 6-2, 6-2. GICC upset top-seeded Omaha Duchesne Academy in the championship match 6-4, 6-2.
The Stars defeated Lincoln Christian 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the third-place match.
“We struggled a bit against a really good GICC team,” Schroer said. “Then we had to turn around and play so quick. We bounced back and were able to pull it out in the end.”
Ashley Waggoner, the Stars’ No. 1 singles player, had a chance to earn fifth place. She lost to Holdrege’s Kaylin Brown 8-0 in the match, but earned seventh place with a 8-5 victory over Crete.
“She came down here and I mean just killed it,” Schroer said. “She did what we need her to do. She had a hurt knee through some of it and just kept playing and did well.”
