Kearney High girls split a pair of duals Thursday in Lincoln.

LINCOLN — The Kearney High girls tennis team defeated Lincoln Northeast 5-1 and lost to Lincoln Southeast 4-2 in action Thursday in Lincoln.

“Lincoln Southeast is one of the top teams in the state. Today showed us that we can compete with the top teams,” KHS coach Troy Saulsbury said. “Hopefully we can use this result as motivation and as a springboard for the final two weeks of the season.”

Alli Chally and Makenna Henning, playing at No. 2 doubles, went 2-0, winning 8-5 over Lincoln Southeast and 8-0 over Lincoln Northeast.

“Alli and Makenna did a great job of mixing up their strategy. They really frustrated their opponents and forced them into some errors,” Saulsbury said. They “also kept the ball low and didn’t allow Lincoln Southeast to hit many easy volleys. We made them volley up which then set us up for the next shot.”

Bella Engberg and Liz Young scored Kearney’s other point against Southeast.

“Bella and Liz set each other up well by hitting consistently cross-court. They both served well, giving us an advantage from the beginning of the point. I really liked their intensity and energy they showed on the court,” Saulsbury said.
