KEARNEY — The Kearney baseball team ended the regular season Wednesday with a 12-2 victory over Twin River at Memorial Field.

The Bearcats scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Kearney (15-8) out-hit the Titans 11-3 and did not commit an error. Kearney also had six extra-base hits.

Lead-off hitter Layne Shiers led the Bearcats, going 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. He also scored two runs.

Tyler Schirmer contributed a triple while Will Richter, Seth Stroh, Jaxon Worley and Korben RIch doubled.

On the mound, Noah Carpenter started, giving up one hit while striking out three in two innings. Four other pitchers worked one inning with Brandt Groskreutz and Stroh striking out three.

The final pitching totals included 10 strikeouts and four walks.

Kearney will be back in action Saturday in the district tournament at Millard West. The Bearcats face Millard North (12-11) at 1:30 p.m. in the single-elimination bracket. If the Bearcats beat Millard North, the champonship is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Millard West (22-4) is on the other side of the bracket that includes Lincoln Northeast and Omaha North. Millard West is the highest-seeded team in the state.
