GIBBON — The Gibbon Buffaloes crowned three champions Saturday to win their own Bill Foster Invitational.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet that we just won our home meet,” Gibbon coach John Bisbee said. “It feels pretty good and our kids definitely deserve it.
“We’ll take what we got, but there are also a lot of things we need to work on. We won some matches we could have easily lost, so we will enjoy it for a while and then get back to work because our schedule doesn’t get any easier.”
Gibbon’s victory Saturday didn’t come easy.
Heading into the 285-pound championship, and final match of day, Gibbon trailed Wood River 183-187. In a decisive, head-to-head showdown, Class C No. 3-rated Aaron Bisbee (21-2) of Gibbon decisioned Wood River’s Colby Spiehs (26-4) 2-1 to seal the Buffaloes’ 193-191 victory.
“I didn’t feel the pressure because they didn’t tell me until after the match that I was the decider,” Aaron Bisbee said. “My job as the heavyweight is to go out and get the win. I have to give the credit to the team, my dad who’s our coach, and obviously God.
“If there is something I take from today it’s that I definitely have to work harder. I’m a little bit out of condition right now. I need to push my technique and hope for good things.”
No. 4-rated Eli Van Matre (138) and Jacob Eckel (182) also captured championships for Gibbon.
“It feels pretty good to win in front of the home crowd,” Van Matre said. “We have a lot of family here that we have to show up for. We looked good as a team, but I think there is always room to tweak some stuff. It feels nice to win something again and get the tradition back.”
The Kearney Catholic Stars found themselves stuck in the middle, finishing sixth in a field of 11 teams.
“We were down a couple of guys this meet, but we should have them back next week, which will help,” Kearney Catholic coach Matt Rogers said. “We wrestled hard but we let a couple things get away. Overall the effort was good, we just have to keep working.
“We’re aiming for districts and state, so these little setbacks aren’t a big deal. We just have to use them to get better.”
The Stars crowned three champions — Alex Cantral (106), Damon Rodriguez (113) and Thomas Connely (170).
“As a team we are young but have a solid foundation,” Cantral said. “We need to look to improve and build on what we have started here. We need to work on confidence, not giving up on ourselves, and coming through for those late wins.”
In one of the day’s premier matches, Wood River’s Jordan Wescoatt, ranked fourth, defeated Kearney Catholic’s third-ranked Adam Keating 6-4 in the 132-pound final.
In their last meeting, Keating (24-2) won by one point in the final 10 seconds of the match, giving Wescoatt (27-1) his only loss of the season. Saturday, in a similar match, Wescoatt scored in the final seconds of the match.
“Wescoatt is a good wrestler, and is real tough to score on when he’s on his feet,” Rogers said. “Adam was wrestling well, but a couple critical mistakes hurt us. They are evenly matched but are two completely different wrestlers.”
With a win notched on one another, Wescoatt says he looks forward to seeing Keating again this year, perhaps as early as this week’s Lou-Platte Conference meet.
“I wouldn’t call Keating a rival,” Wescoatt said. “You have to consider everyone you wrestle a rival, but it’s always nice to have a wrestler like Keating because you push each other and you can see where you stand with everyone else. After that win I felt pretty dang good. He was a (state) champion last year so it’s a great feeling.”
