KEARNEY — Kearney Runza Seniors, facing some of the best teams on their schedule, salvaged one victory in a five-game stretch over the weekend.
Runza, facing a pitching shortage because of injury and absence, lost to Millard West 11-3 on Friday before falling to Bellevue West, Omaha Westside and Sioux Falls (S.D.) East over the weekend at the Turf Classic in Omaha. Runza salvaged the weekend by bumping off Millard South on Saturday.
With the losses, Kearney falls to 8-5 and travels to North Platte on Tuesday for a Cornhusker League game.
Kearney Post 52 was in action at its own tournament, splitting games with Waverly and Salina, Kan.
The Kearney Five Points Juniors went 0-5 in a tournament in Hastings, while Kearney Jersey’s Seniors were rained out in tournament play in North Platte.
Highlights of the weekend included:
- Bellevue West 6, Runza 2
A three-run first inning set the tone for Bellevue West’s 6-2 win over Runza. The winners added another run in the third and two more in the fourth to lead 6-1. Kearney scored single runs in the third and seventh innings.
Bellevue West limited Kearney to four hits, two by Sam Engberg, who had a double and an RBI.
Noah Carpenter was the losing pitcher, throwing six innings giving up nine hits. He struck out two.
- Runza 10, Millard South 2
Kearney put the game away early with a seven-run rally in the top of the first and another two-run addition in the second to lead 9-0.
Runza had nine hits with Layne Shiers, Brandt Groskreutz and Nolan Eatherton getting two hits each. Connor Clevenger delivered a double, driving in two runs, while Engberg had a double.
Mason Casper pitched a six-inning, complete game, surrendering four hits and two walks while striking out four.
- Om. Westside 9, Runza 4
Omaha Westside plated seven runs in the sixth inning to claim a come-from-behind victory over Kearney Runza.
Kearney out-hit Westside 10-8 but committed four errors and couldn’t stop the rally in the sixth.
Jaxon Worley and Groskreutz each went 2 for 3 with a double. Rich was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Seth Stroh pitched five innings, allowing six hits and striking out seven.
- SF East 11, Runza 9
Bookend five-run innings, the first and the sixth, helped Sioux Falls East erase a four-run spurt in the fourth by Kearney Runza.
Runza also scored two runs in the second, one in the fifth and two in the sixth but couldn’t recover from Sioux Falls’ final rally.
Kearney put together 11 hits — three by Corbin Foster and two each by Eatherton and Stroh. Worley had a double.
- Post 52 5, Waverly 4
Nick Carlson’s two-out single in the eighth inning plated Ethan Mroczek with the winning run as Kearney Post 52 (9-5) beat Waverly 5-4 on Sunday.
Kearney needed a three-run rally in the seventh to send the game to extra innings and singles by Seth Altwine, Alex Schall and Dylan Welsh helped deliver that rally.
Altwine and Collin Fruhling led the offense with two hits each. Dawson Stutz contributed a double.
Tanner Johnson, who pitched the last 2 2/3 innings without giving up a walk or a hit, was credited with the win. Riley Miller pitched the first 5 1/3 innings, striking out five while giving up four hits and three walks.
- Salina 7, Post 52 6
Salina (Kan.) Scored five runs in the third inning Saturday and added solo runs in the fourth and fifth then held on to beat Kearney Post 52 7-6.
Kearney scored two in the seventh and had the bases loaded when the game ended.
Salina out-hit Kearney 11-7 but had to overcome five errors.
Schall led Kearney’s offense, going 3 for 4. Fruhling drove in four runs.
Altwine took the pitching loss, giving up 11 hits but striking out seven.
- Columbus 8, Five Points 7
Columbus scored one in the bottom of the sixth Sunday after Kearney Five Points Juniors had tied the game in the top of the inning to come away with an 8-7 victory.
The game ended under the time limit.
Columbus, despite being out-hit 8-5, took control of the game with a six-run rally in the fourth.
For Kearney Evan Polen was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Koren Conrad pitched 4 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.
The loss was the fourth one-run setback for Five Points (4-8).
- Omaha Central 9, Five Points 0
Omaha Central held Kearney to four hits and rolled to a 9-0 victory on Saturday. Logan Arnold had two of Kearney’s hits.
- Hastings 10, Five Points 9
Hastings scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a 10-9 win over Kearney Five Points.
Kearney led 9-3 after 3 1/2 innings but Hastings scored one in the fifth before forging the winning rally.
Post 52’s Turner Plugge and Peyton Larson had two hits each. Arnold pitched the first four innings, giving up three hits, walking four and striking out four.
- Norfolk 10, Five Points 0
Kearney Five Points managed one hit, a single by Koren Conrad, in a 10-0 loss to Norfolk on Friday.
